Funding Assistance for Mammograms for women UNDER 35?

(Cross posted to the Breast Cancer Tribe)

Does anyone have any resources for financial assistance or funding programs for those that are under the age of 35?

I have been banging my head against a wall trying to find a program for women under 35 (though most seem geared for 40+)...

I have tried:
Susan G. Komen Foundation: The patient must be 35 before a funding voucher is issued.
American Cancer Society: The patient must be over the age of 40.
Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman counts: The patient must be over the age of 40.
CDC: The patient must be over the age of 40.

Has anyone had any other experiences with these? (Crossing fingers that maybe I missed something...)
Have you been unsuccessful with other places? (So that I may cross them off my lists to look into...)
Have you had successes elsewhere? (Please tell me SOMEONE has found a place to help young women in this situation...)

My father has just been diagnosed with the beginnings of prostate cancer. He is very low income and on Minnesota Care. Anyway he discovered that Minnesota care would only cover 10,000 toward surgery. In this day and age that doesn't go far. Anyway the surgery is $39,000. He will be 65 and on Medicare? next year, but waiting that long could be very bad. He tried to get on medical assistance at the hospitals suggestion but he was denied. I am not sure why. They do own their own home with most of their income coming from the rental of a small apartment in it so selling it would mean loosing a major part of their income and have some other penalties as they had received a grant and loan to fix the roof and some other things much of which will be forgiven in 10 years I think. I don't really understand the urban renewal grants except to say think twice before using one, but that is another story. If he sold his house he would not be able to raise enough money for his surgery in any case. It isn't worth much. What I am wondering is are there places he can go for financial help. I know I don't have anything close to that kind of money and neither do my brother or sister. We are all very worried about this and don't know what to do. I was hoping that someone here would have some ideas. I am not sure why Minnesota Care pays for prescreaning when it won't cover the surgery. That is just cruel.

I would be greatful for any help anyone can provide. I am not sure what to do next.

First diagnosed at age 15, and then at age 24 found to be recurrent, I have enjoyed the last few years of no needles.

My dad was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. While the surgery is tricky and the survival rate low, he has a great attitude and is ready to fight. As a family member, it's hard to feel so helpless as he goes through this. Of course I am doing everything I can to let him know how much I love him, that I am here for him whatever he needs, but I wish I could better anticipate what it is that he does actually need. I know there are days he wants to talk about it, and days he doesn't.

Do any of you have stories about ways that friends or family members supported you -- tangibly or emotionally -- through your cancer treatment, or things that you later realized would have helped at the time, and wish someone had done for you?

Help!

One of my best friends now has breast cancer. This is a tough one for me. Early in 2006 another one of my closest friends passed after 2 years of chemo and a stem cell transplant. It was the chemo that killed her BTW. Now another one of my friends has cancer. Both women, both under 30. The difference here is that my friend now refuses to pursue chemo, drugs or radiation. She believes that if she does not recognize the tumor and pursues natural healing, it will go away.

God bless her!

I am going to be taking an active role int he healing process. I have already started performing energy work on her breasts. I have her drinking Tahitian Noni juice and chlorophyll. I need advice!

Namaste

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure -- September 24 along San Francisco's Embarcadero

The 16th annual Komen San Francisco Race for the Cure will take place this year on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at a new location along the Embarcadero, San Francisco. The new site is more visible than the previous location, bringing the possibility of raising more money to support breast cancer research, education and treatment. This 5K Run/Walk or 1 mile Fun Walk starts at 9am at the crosswalk at the SW corner of the Ferry Building. The run goes along the Embarcadero, around AT&T Park, and back along the Embarcadero.

Also new to the race this year: Kids for the Cure. Any child between the ages of 6 and 12 can register for only $10 and will receive a child-sized Race for the Cure T-shirt, available to the first 500 children registering.

Every registered participant receives an official Race T-shirt. Breast cancer survivors, who are the inspiration for the Race for the Cure, may pick up complimentary pink T-shirts and visors from the Survivor Booth on Race day. In addition, all Komen Race participants are encouraged to wear In Memory of and In Celebration of back signs, honoring loved ones for
their strength and courage.

A special survivor recognition ceremony will be held in Justin Herman Plaza on Race day in front of the stage at 10:30am to honor all breast cancer survivors. The top three finishers in the Breast Cancer Survivor Division will receive commemorative awards donated by Mark Harrington Crystal, in addition to the first, second and third place finishing prizes. First Place Master Survivor (age 60-64) and First Place Senior Survivor (age 65+) will also receive special commemorative awards.

In addition to individual participants, teams are invited to compete in the following categories: Fastest Team: first and second place; Largest Team: team with the most participants corporate/government, small business, family & friends, schools/education; and Highest Fundraiser Team first and second place.

The goal of the 2006 Komen San Francisco Race for the Cure is to raise $100 per participant, the cost of a single mammogram. Money raised from last years race has been granted to 11 organizations in the 9 Bay Area counties and also has helped to create a program for free breast cancer screening and mammography services for uninsured Bay Area women.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Goodman Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan Goodman Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Komen Foundation is an international organization with a network of 75,000 active volunteers working through local Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. For more information on breast health or breast cancer, please visit www.sfkomen.org or call the Foundations National Toll-Free Breast Care Helpline at 1-800-IM AWARE (1-800-462-9273).

I'm a tattoo artist in San Francsico specializing in botanical/nature tattoos. I also do a lot of work covering scars. Tattoo art can be a powerful reclaiming of a body after surgery. Some people cover the scars completely, while others create a design to interact with the scar. The tattoo cannot erase the scar or change the texture, but it can be a beautiful symbol of survival and thriving.

Cancer Anxiety Study with Psilocybin

Hello and thank you for an opportunity to visit your community. I'm a study coordinator for a clinical trial going on at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. The trial has been going for about a year now, and we're looking for seven more people who might want to participate. (I'm new to this process, so if this is not an appropriate forum for this posting, please say so!)

I've included some basic background on the study below and a link to our posting on www.clinicaltrials.gov.

Many Blessings,
Alicia

************

The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is conducting a study designed to measure the effectiveness of the novel psychoactive medication psilocybin on the reduction of anxiety, depression, and physical pain.

The significance of this study is that it is addressing the important issues of psychological and spiritual well being of people who have advanced cancer. Psilocybin is a novel agent which produces a profound alteration in your state of consciousness. It is the main active ingredient found in “magic mushrooms”.

Our specific aim is to learn whether this psychoactive drug, psilocybin, might be effective in reducing anxiety, depression and physical pain. For each participant there will be two overnight stays at the hospital. In one session you will be given a placebo and in the other you will get the active medication, but no one will know which drug is administered when. You will be asked to fill out questionnaires about how you feel, your pain levels and your moods. There will also be at least two psychotherapy meetings before the study sessions, so that you are fully aware of what to expect and to have all your questions answered.

In order to take part in the study, volunteers must have advanced-stage cancer and be between the ages of 18 and 70.

For more information about the study requirements, please visit this Web site:

http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct/show/NCT00302744?order=1

i'm not exactly sure why i'm writing this, but i was wondering if anyone could share what they did to get through the time after you learned you had cancer -- how did you deal with it?

i was diagnosed with malignant melanoma a couple of weeks ago, had surgery and sentinel node biopsy, and found out yesterday it has metastasized into at least one lymph node and i'll have to go through possibly more surgery and immunotherapy.

i'm still reeling from this, partly because i've obsessively researched my disease and know the numbers and the odds, and partly because it feels like everything is now falling apart. suddenly i don't know how long i'll be able to work, to support myself, so i have insurance. if i get too sick to work and lose my job, what happens then? there are just so many questions.

anyway, i guess i'm just wondering if there were people who could share their experiences, maybe offer some reassurance that i can get through this no matter how it feels right now.

thanks.

Cloning Experiment Shows Cancer Reversible - Report

Sat Jul 31, 5:01 PM ET Add Health - Reuters to My Yahoo!

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A cloning experiment may show that the body itself has the ability to reverse cancer, U.S.-based researchers said on Saturday.

They cloned mouse embryos from a melanoma skin cancer cell, and created healthy adult mice using some of the cloned cancer cells, showing that malignancy is not the inevitable fate of a cancer cell.

"This settles a principal biological question," said Dr. Rudolf Jaenisch of the Whitehead Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (news - web sites), one of the country's leading experts in cloning.

He said while the genetic elements of cancer cannot be reversed, the epigenetics -- how the genes are actually turned on and off -- can be.

The finding, published in the journal Genes and Development, point to a new way to treat cancer, said Lynda Chin of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School (news - web sites), who worked on the study.

"Drugs that target the cancer epigenome may prove to be a key therapeutic opportunity for diverse cancers," she said in a statement. In other words, it might be possible to silence a cancer gene.

Cancer begins when certain genes mutate, or when a certain, inherited version of a gene somehow gets turned on.

This can happen through various so-called epigenetic processes -- when other molecules in a cell affect genes without actually altering the sequence of DNA.

In the experiment, Konrad Hochedlinger and Robert Blelloch, both researchers in Jaenisch's lab, took the nucleus from a melanoma cell and injected it into a hollowed-out mouse egg cell.

This started the egg growing as if it had been fertilized by sperm.

They did not allow this embryonic mouse to develop, but harvested from it embryonic stem cells -- immature cells that have the potential to become any cell in the body at all.

They put these stem cells into healthy mouse blastocysts -- very early embryos only a few days old. Some of these developed into healthy, normal mice.

"It's important to note that the stem cells from the cloned melanoma were incorporated into most, if not all, tissues of adult mice, showing that they can develop into normal, healthy cells," Blelloch said.

They included skin pigmentation cells, immune cells and connective tissue.

This could only have happened if the cancer cells had lost their malignant qualities, at least temporarily, the researchers said.

But when certain cancer-related genes in these mice were activated, they developed malignant tumors at a much faster rate than normal mice, the researchers added.

Many researchers want to try similar experiments with human cancer cells, but the administration of President Bush (news - web sites) forbids the use of federal funds for such study because it would involve the creation of what is technically a human embryo.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 28 which was about 12 years ago. (It doesn't seem like that long ago.) I went through a mastectomy, chemotherapy and no reconstruction. I met my husband after all that! And now I have two beautiful boys after the potential prospect of not being able to have any!!

Let's talk about what we have gone through and what keeps us going so we can help others who need our hope, joy and love.
