I am new here an hoping for some help...

My father has just been diagnosed with the beginnings of prostate cancer. He is very low income and on Minnesota Care. Anyway he discovered that Minnesota care would only cover 10,000 toward surgery. In this day and age that doesn't go far. Anyway the surgery is $39,000. He will be 65 and on Medicare? next year, but waiting that long could be very bad. He tried to get on medical assistance at the hospitals suggestion but he was denied. I am not sure why. They do own their own home with most of their income coming from the rental of a small apartment in it so selling it would mean loosing a major part of their income and have some other penalties as they had received a grant and loan to fix the roof and some other things much of which will be forgiven in 10 years I think. I don't really understand the urban renewal grants except to say think twice before using one, but that is another story. If he sold his house he would not be able to raise enough money for his surgery in any case. It isn't worth much. What I am wondering is are there places he can go for financial help. I know I don't have anything close to that kind of money and neither do my brother or sister. We are all very worried about this and don't know what to do. I was hoping that someone here would have some ideas. I am not sure why Minnesota Care pays for prescreaning when it won't cover the surgery. That is just cruel.

I would be greatful for any help anyone can provide. I am not sure what to do next.

Newt, this is totally a shot in the dark, but I recently heard this story on NPR about "medical tourism":

    www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php

Because of the cost of medical treatment in the U.S., and our totally screwed-up health insurance system, more and more people are turning to overseas hospitals for comparable care at a fraction of the cost. As I said, it's a shot in the dark, but if your father's situation is really desperate, then it may be worth investigating at least.

I'm so sorry about your dad -- hang in there, and good luck.

If things look worse I will have him check into this. So far they say he should still be ok. I don't know if we should believe them but what can you do. He did have to go in and get outpatient surgery done for something else and they covered that. Too bad this couldn't be too. I really don't understand insurance. I don't believe that we are better off than other countries because of it! I really would like to be a part of changing that! Have to see what I can do.

Good luck to you. You are a good son to help.

You might look at natural/ non-surgery options, which are obviously much cheaper.

Imagine if you put even 1/3 of the resources you are collecting for this surgery into r and r for your dad, what improvement his body might make on it's own. (For example, full rest and enjoyment; no work)

If he eats a traditional american diet (eggs and sausage breakfast, etc.), then going very healthy with the diet can sometimes be enough. He wouldn't enjoy it necesarrily, but it would save you a lot of money.

If you took such a path, you would want to set a certain date by which to asess results of the program (i.e. 3 months). All parties would be clear that if there was no significant improvement by that time then he would recieve surgery. (confirmed by blood test, exam/ scan)

You would have to talk to a holistic-friendly MD to determine what safe window he has before surgery is absolutely necesarry.

I am not a doctor. I am a natural health consultant, and I don't diagnose or treat.

I know you didn't ask for this line of thought, but there it is.

    Good luck,
